I decided not to include fine work by film-makers whose work in previous decades was even greater – thus the absence of Hou-Hsiao Hsien, Abbas Kiarostami and Wong Kar Wai, Martin Scorsese and Zhang Yimou. And I really regretted not having room for my 21 to 25, with films by Steven Soderbergh, Kurosawa, Park Chan Wook, Lee Chang Dong and Hang Sang Soo. The relative aesthetic superiority of Asian cinema with the sudden explosion of so many major filmmakers from South Korea in particular, is one of the big stories of the last decade. There were a few directors (Lynch, Anderson, Almodóvar and Van Sant) with more than one film that deserved to be included but I reluctantly decided on one film per director. In my opinion, Van Sant's overall creative burst in this decade is one of the great creative accomplishments in American film history.

Thematische, dann chronologische Reihenfolge.

Wie die Reihenfolge zu Stande kam, ist mir selbst ein Rätsel. Vielleicht sind es einfach die Filme, über die ich am meisten nachgedacht habe. Mit allen habe ich ziemlich viel Spaß gehabt, gerade weil ich ausgerechnet diese oft gegen Ignoranz und Vorurteil in Schutz nehmen musste. Meine 22 sind daher eine ziemlich zerklüftete Landschaft. Manche sind Mainstream, an denen man die oft experimentelle Besonderheit nicht erkennen konnte. Andere Randfilme, die eigentlich trotzdem jeder gesehen haben sollte. Einen Film habe ich wieder rausgenommen, weil an ihm eigentlich nur eine Szene gut ist: jene mit einem sich unendlich oft doppelnden Johnny Depp. Vielleicht wäre das mal eine neue Herausforderung: eine Liste von Filmen, an denen nur eine Szene gut ist.
